Candidate Recruitment

2018 Democractic Candidates Needed!

There are a large number of Missouri State House and State Senate districts without a candidate filed to run in 2018. Please help us recruit strong progressive candidates to run in the following districts. The filing period ends March 27, 2018. We are aware that some candidates that are planning to file have not done so yet. Until they have officially filed we will not remove the district from the map.

If you or someone you know lives in one of these districts and would like to run please contact run@missouridems.org. Find what districts you live in here. If you or they are a progressive please contact@mdpprogressivecaucus.org to see what resources are available and to make sure we send you our candidate endorsement questionnaire.

Currently, there are 39 house districts(24%) and 2 senate districts(12%) without a filed Democratic candidate. In comparison, there are 33 house districts(20%) and 2 senate districts(12%) without a filed Republican candidate.

Maps updated on March 26, 2018. Visit the Secretary of State's website for the most current candidate filing information. Contact run@missouridems.org to find out if someone is planning to file as a Democrat in any of these districts.

Key Points for Recruitment

  • Polls are showing that 2018 will be a wave election for Democrats and districts that would have been considered unwinnable are now in play.
  • The more races Democrats compete in, the better all candidates chances because Republican resources will be spread more thinly for everyone.
  • 2016 primary results showed that Bernie Sanders’ progressive platform and economic message resonated strongly in rural Missouri, where most of the unchallenged districts are.
  • It takes an average of asking someone 9 times to run for office to convince them to run.
  • Candidate filing starts at the Sec. of State’s office in Jeff. City Feb. 27 and ends March 27. It costs $50 to register and the order of names on the ballot is determined by filing order(those that file on the 1st day before 5pm are drawn at random for order)
  • The MDP and MDPPC are happy to answer questions and provide whatever additional resources we can. The free e-book, “Politics the Wellstone Way” is a great resource for progressive grassroots campaign organization, messaging, fundraising, and planning.
